A Town Beneath High Peaks
The Nurhak Mountains belong to the south-eastern Taurus range. Their upper slopes show karst landforms and traces of ancient glaciers, and geomorphologists have studied them in detail. High on Nurhak Mountain lies Ali Gölü, a lake surrounded by local legends. Hikes to the lake begin at a place called Tekardıç, and it is the district's best-known goal for mountaineers and walkers. It is a serious climb, so go with an experienced guide or someone who knows the mountain.
In summer the district moves up to its pastures, where herders spend much of the year. Portable solar systems have even been taken up to pastures without mains electricity, which shows how much of life still happens up there. Further down, at Pınarbaşı in Elbistan, the source of the Ceyhan River wells up from the foot of these same mountains.
