The road first crosses the warm Çukurova plain, then climbs into the Taurus: tunnels, viaducts, deep valleys. If you leave in the late afternoon, the sun drops over the plateau as you come over the mountains and the horizon turns orange. After entering Cappadocia from the Niğde side, the tuff rocks and the first fairy chimneys appear.
Closer to Ürgüp the vineyards thicken. At the edge of town the capped chimneys of the Three Beauties stand out even after dark. Then the steep lanes begin.
Steep Lanes and the Right Car
Many of Ürgüp's boutique hotels are stone mansions set into the hillside. Their lanes are narrow, some steep and cobbled. Bear that in mind when you choose.

Plenty of guests leave Ürgüp with a few bottles of wine or a jar of grape molasses in their luggage. We work door to door, but some hotel lanes in Ürgüp are too narrow or steep for larger vehicles. In that case the car stops at the nearest safe point to the hotel. Writing the hotel's name and phone number in the notes helps the driver find the best approach. Sedans handle the narrow lanes more easily.
How should we pack the wine we bought in Ürgüp?
Wrap each bottle in clothing and place it in the centre of a large suitcase, where it is cushioned during the drive. Since you will be flying afterwards, check your airline's rules on liquids and checked baggage before you pack. Remember that hand luggage has strict liquid limits.
