On the far side the view suddenly opens onto a wide, treeless plateau with villages scattered far apart. After Niğde the first pale tuff formations of Cappadocia appear.
Past Nevşehir the road turns north-west. As you approach Gülşehir, look out for rock-cut buildings close to the road. That is the Açıksaray open-air site, right beside the Nevşehir–Gülşehir road. It means you are nearly there.
In winter the mountain section and the plateau can be harsh. On days when snow or ice is forecast, an earlier pickup for your return leg is the relaxed choice.
Picking a Car for a Long Ride
On a short city run the vehicle class hardly matters. On this route it does. Legroom, seat width and boot space count when you sit for hours.
