The same sand is critical nesting ground for green sea turtles in the Eastern Mediterranean, and it is officially registered as a strictly protected sensitive area. From late spring, females come ashore at night to lay their eggs. As summer goes on, the hatchlings dig their way out and head for the water, while volunteers and researchers keep a close eye on the beach.
A Few Simple Beach Rules
Anyone staying in Kazanli should know a handful of rules. None of them is hard.
- Leave nest markers and protective cages alone
- No fires on the sand and no bright lights aimed at the beach at night
- Do not take sand away or leave plastic behind
- Never drive onto the beach
- Keep dogs away from marked nests
- Fill in any holes dug by children before you leave
